Cache is now finally back in CS2. However, it doesn't look exactly like the old map that players fell in love with. After years of staying away from the spotlight, the iconic map is reintroduced by Valve with a full Source 2 overhaul and subtle gameplay tweaks.
It comes with the recent April 28 update in CS2. Cache is now available in Competitive, Casual, Deathmatch, and Retakes. This popular map had been missing from Active Duty since 2019, when it got replaced in the rotation. Its comeback follows Valve's acquisition of full rights from creator Shawn "FMPONE" Snelling in 2025 and a nearly yearlong rebuild.
Now, coming to the changes, the most noticeable ones come in the form of visuals. The map's typical older green tone from the CS:GO days has gone, and it is replaced with a cleaner industrial look inspired by a Chernobyl-like setting.
Even lighting textures and environmental details have been rebuilt from scratch. Thus, the map looks more vibrant and readable now. However, there is no change in the core structure. Mid, A Main, B Halls, and Checkers remain intact. This is why the CS:GO veterans don't have to relearn their approach to playing this map.
There are gameplay changes as well, but minimal yet meaningful. The CT-side boost opening in mid doesn't exist anymore, reducing utility usage possibilities. Bombsites A and B now have updated cover and clearer sightlines. There are other small additions, like a self-boost on Shroud at A site.
However, one removal has sparked serious criticism. There was a fan-favorite graffiti on the wall below Heaven on B site that honored s1mple’s legendary AWP 1v2 against Fnatic at ESL One Cologne 2016. But that no longer exists in the recent version of the map. Valve hasn't explained the reason behind this decision.
Early reception of this new map has been strong, and CS2's X post welcoming back Cache received nearly seven million impressions. And why wouldn't the hype be such? For veterans, it sparks nostalgia, with them rediscovering old wallbangs and setups. Some bugs might be there, but still, this iconic return has put a smile on many CS2 players.
Will Cache Return to Active Duty in CS2?
Valve has yet to officially confirm when Cache will enter the Active Duty pool in CS2. But multiple signals suggest it's only a matter of time. Developers have already hinted at future rotations, and the map's immediate popularity supports its case.
The timing might as well play its part. Many expect Cache to enter the professional map pool after major events such as IEM Cologne 2026 in June. This potentially aligns the map with the next Premier season.
For now, Cache is fully playable across standard modes. This way, your new teammates who haven't had a taste of this map can adapt to it. With its new balanced layout, updated design, and strong legacy, this map fits like a glove into the current CS2 ecosystem.
