Blizzard has issued a copyright infringement lawsuit against Project Ascension, a private World of Warcraft server that reportedly serves more than a million players across several realms. The server claims to offer a classless, free-to-play system that allows players to create their own characters and customize various spells.
The lawsuit filed by Blizzard in California claims that the makers of Project Ascension seek to profit from the WoW IP.
"The defendants in this action have built an entire business on large-scale, egregious, and ongoing infringement of Blizzard's intellectual property," the complaint from Blizzard's lawyers reads.

"Defendants are in the for-profit business of developing, operating, maintaining, and monetizing an unauthorized copy-cat version of WoW known as 'Project Ascension'," the complaint claims.
Furthermore, the complaint obtained by Aftermath also claims that Project Ascension's servers are hosted on "bulletproof" Russian servers under the Aeza Group.
The company was sanctioned in 2025 under U.S. law. Blizzard also named six defendants along with several companies. The complaint claims that these are shell companies used to avoid U.S. tax liability.
Project Ascension is free-to-play, but it allows players to purchase items using in-game currency. The game's appeal comes from its classless system, where players aren't locked into a specific playstyle.
The makers of the fan server are yet to respond to the lawsuit publicly. However, this isn't the first time Blizzard has taken such measures against a private World of Warcraft fan server.
Popular server Turtle WoW was shut down in May 2026 following a lawsuit and subsequent settlement with Blizzard Entertainment. Stormforge Project also shut down the same month after receiving a cease and desist from Blizzard.
What is the Future of the World of Warcraft Server Project Ascension?
Things don't look great for Project Ascension. In recent history, Blizzard Entertainment took legal action against Turtle WoW, and it had to be shut down followed by a settlement.
Ultimately, the servers use Blizzard's World of Warcraft IP in some capacity. An ecosystem that allows fan servers may be more favorable to these private servers. A similar request was made by Turtle WoW's makers after its shutdown.
"Unfortunately, unlike other studios, Blizzard does not yet have a framework that allows projects like ours to operate without risking legal conflict." The request read.
"With that in mind, we respectfully ask that Blizzard consider establishing a formal ecosystem for licensing fan-run community servers."
However, Blizzard Entertainment has not responded to the request. The company has certainly not become more lenient toward servers either.
If it is successful in its lawsuit, the Microsoft-owned company may be able to shut down Project Ascension entirely.
