The long-awaited shift is finally here. Two of the most popular titles of the Call of Duty franchise, Black Ops and Black Ops II, are coming to PlayStation platforms in July.
Treyarch has officially confirmed that both of these classics will launch on PS4 and PS5. The announcement comes after reports earlier this month suggested the classic shooters were being prepared for modern PlayStation hardware.
These ports are being handled by Iron Galaxy. This studio already has some of the hit ports of all time, like The Last of Us Part I, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4, Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, and many more.
This announcement ends a lengthy wait for the PlayStation players, who have been exempt of the two great titles, which actually shaped the Black Ops franchise. Those players have not been able to play either title natively since the PlayStation 3 era.
However, that's not the case with Xbox players. And all thanks to Microsoft's backward compatibility program. Still, PlayStation owners were left without a modern way to revisit the original campaigns, multiplayer modes, and Zombies experiences.
Treyarch also clarified that these releases are just ports, not full-fledged remasters. Hence, players should not expect modernized visuals, redesigned assets, or other major overhauls.
The original Black Ops launched in 2010 and quickly became one of the most successful entries in Call of Duty history. Its sequel followed in 2012 and expanded on the formula with a futuristic setting and branching story elements. It also offered one of the franchise's most popular zombie experiences. After more than a decade, the fan base of these two titles doesn't seem to drop a bit.
The timing of these releases is also significant. After the release of Black Ops 6 in 2024 and Black Ops 7 in 2025, the BO series is taking a break. This year, it's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, which will be taking the center stage.
So, newer-age fans on console get a great way to keep the Black Ops fun running!
Xbox Players Question Missing Fixes as Black Ops Ports Head to PlayStation
With this news, every gaming fan is delighted, except those who use Xbox and PCs. Despite launching new ports of PlayStation, fans of those two platforms are frustrated with the issues of the existing versions.
The main issue with those versions is hacker-filled multiplayer lobbies. And keeping in mind the age of these games, that's quite obvious, unless the developers did take a look. And it seems they didn't.
Xbox and PC fans questioned why the announcement focused on bringing the games to PlayStation without mentioning updates for Xbox or PC versions. Apart from that, concerns about resolution limitations, server quality, and the lack of broader modernization efforts are also present.
