XBOX has outlasted other home console brands such as Sega, Atari, and more. Out of the approximately 200 million units that the gaming giant has sold since 2001, one console outperformed the rest.
Among its nine consoles across four generations, the XBOX 360 is the clear winner. First launched in 2005, the console introduced in-game achievements that rewarded players for achieving certain milestones.
This is now a dominant feature across games and platforms. The console also enhanced the XBOX Live service and introduced the XBOX Live Arcade option, which helped indie games reach a wider audience.

From wireless controllers to improved software capabilities, the XBOX 360 had it all. Its launch lineup included games like Call of Duty 2, Gauntlet, FIFA '06, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Quake, and more.
These innovations made XBOX 360 the best-selling XBOX console as per Fandom's VG Sales Wiki page, with 85,730,000 lifetime units sold.
In second place, we have XBOX One at 58,000,000 units sold. This console improved internet-based features, such as voice chat and sharing video games, and introduced the ability to stream, record, and share gameplay videos.
However, it also had controversies clouding its release. The console required a constant internet connection to sync players' libraries. It also introduced the digital rights management system, which helped prevent the sale of used games.
The third best-selling console from Microsoft was the original XBOX. Released in 2001, this home console revolutionized the gaming industry. It had its own built-in hard drive, an enjoyable multimedia system, XBOX Live, and XBOX Game Pass.
The original XBOX sold 24,650,000 units over the course of its production life.
Ironically, the lowest-selling XBOX family is actually the latest. The Series X|S console family has sold roughly 33 to 35 million units. This generation of devices has suffered due to the global chip shortage, soaring prices, and a lack of exclusive titles.
And as things stand, it seems future generations of the XBOX console will be affected by it too.
Here's why XBOX's next console, Project Helix, is in jeopardy
In 2026, hardware prices are soaring higher than ever. The market is facing a chronic shortage of RAM and storage chips. Making consoles has become increasingly expensive, leading to price hikes for Series X|S.
In March 2026, the codename 'Project Helix' was announced for the next generation of consoles. Speaking to Fortune, CEO Asha Sharma admitted that it's difficult to imagine the average consumer spending "thousands of dollars" on a new console.
Therefore, XBOX will have to adopt a radically different business model to sustain the manufacture and release of existing and future generations of consoles.
An IGN report suggested that Project Helix may come out in 2027. Exact details are awaited, but rising production costs may lead the company to find creative solutions for owning a console, such as a subscription-based model.
