Battlefield Hardline
A 2015 title from the Battlefield series is approaching the end of its online lifecycle on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
The official announcement stated that the game will be delisted from digital storefronts on May 22, followed by its multiplayer services shutting down on June 22.
Despite the shutdown, players who own the game will still be able to access its single-player mode, as it runs offline. However, all multiplayer modes and online features will no longer be available.
PC players can still access the game through Steam and the EA app as the online services remain active for the platform.
EA has provided an FAQ section on its website outlining the reasons for removing online services.
Battlefield Hardline was originally released in 2015. It was developed by Visceral Games in collaboration with DICE. The game features a cops-vs-criminal setting unlike other entries in the series, which focuses on traditional military warfare.
Electronic Arts has been gradually pulling support from older Battlefield titles over the past few years as player numbers decline and maintaining servers becomes less practical.
EA is shifting focus toward the next Battlefield release, prioritizing newer titles and ongoing live-service support over maintaining older games.
More titles that were shut down
Online services for Battlefield 3, Battlefield 4, and Battlefield Hardline were shut down on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2024, effectively bringing multiplayer on those platforms to an end.
These closures follow a familiar pattern. The titles are first removed from digital stores to stop new purchases, and then the servers are shut down effectively taking the games offline once the active player base drops below a certain level.
Offline modes, where available, are typically left as is for the game owners, allowing limited access even after multiplayer support ends.
The shutdown of Battlefield Hardline on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One shows that this process is now extending beyond older hardware.
This also signals that even newer console generations are not guaranteed long-term online support as engagement declines.
