Amazon Exec Reveals Plans on James Bond and Lord of the Rings Games

Amazon Gaming General Manager Jeff Gattis has assured fans that the company is keeping an eye on both the James Bond and Lord of the Rings franchises. While Gattis said there are no confirmations of a sequel to 007 First Light, Amazon Gaming is committed to delivering what fans want.

The success of 007 First Light, which sold more than 2.7 million copies in its first week, has seen fans push for a sequel in this James Bond origin series, along with recurring demand for a title built in or around the Lord of the Rings universe.

Gattis told IGN, "Trust that we're going to be smart about this. I mean, it's market appetite. As long as we feel there's a desire for players to have the game, it’s safe to say it's going to be made."

Fans have fallen in love with the game that explored the origins of the legendary James Bond. And IO Interactive, the studio behind 007 First Light, is confident it will be a profitable title, based on the early numbers and positive reaction to the game, as per CEO Hakan Abrak.

As far as Lord of the Rings is concerned, fans have remained hopeful despite Amazon canceling two Lord of the Rings MMOs it was developing.

Gattis underlined Amazon Gaming's plans while speaking to IGN. He said, "It's not the most satisfying answer, but the true answer is we're still looking at a number of different things… But evaluating different concepts is trying to figure out what game we want to make, what's the right one for our audience, what's the right one for the broader audience. And my hope is that we'll get there."

Gattis also hinted that a new concept may already be under consideration. "I looked at a project a couple of weeks ago that I thought was quite compelling that perhaps we can go forward with," he said, according to GameSpot.

Lord of the Rings is a fabled media franchise and still has a big following. The movie trilogy is still adored by fans, and a game set in that universe could appeal to them.

Amazon MGM Can Take Inspiration From XBOX’s Path

Given the success of games based on popular franchises like Dune, Alien, The Walking Dead, Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Marvel, Amazon MGM could benefit from developing a Lord of the Rings title.

007 First Light can pave the way for an entire James Bond gaming universe, especially with Amazon MGM holding the rights to future James Bond games.

XBOX's focus on reviving franchises like Crazy Taxi and Halo at the XBOX Games Showcase 2026 highlights the continued demand for legacy gaming franchises.

The company can take that approach to give fans the Lord of the Rings game they want while continuing to focus on making AAA games, something Gattis has said the company remains committed to.
