Sony's State of Play 2026 showcase just revealed details about Dune: Awakening, a survival multiplayer game set in the Dune universe for the PlayStation 5.

The game has already been released on PC in 2025, and is now making its way onto PS5 soon. The game’s connection to the Dune franchise has fueled significant fan anticipation.

The Release Date

The State of Play 2026 event has confirmed a September 22 release date, with Funcom delivering an open-world survival game that connects the Dune universe with a mix of gameplay features at its core.

The Dune Universe

While Funcom has used the Dune universe, the game is set in an alternate timeline on the deserts of Arrakis. In Dune: Awakening, the battle between Houses Atreides and Harkonnen continues, Paul Atreides is never born, Duke Leto is still alive, and Lady Jessica gives birth to a daughter.

The Storyline and Gameplay

The story follows players as they explore Arrakis and uncover the secrets hidden across the desert world.

Players will have to be wary of giant sandworms in the desert, creatures that can fatally harm players and vehicles. Like any survival game, players will seek resources to build and expand bases while aligning with one of the two factions.

The game also includes a single-player mode, with players able to enjoy both PvE and PvP gameplay within the Dune universe.

Imagine Rust, but in the Dune universe. This open-world survival multiplayer game could become a quick favorite among fans, mainly because of how popular the Dune franchise has become in the media industry.

While it is an alternate timeline, getting the opportunity to wander around Arrakis and live through the battle between the two Houses is a unique experience.

The alternate timeline offers fans a chance to see how Arrakis might have evolved under different circumstances.
