The Marvel Universe Continuity
Set in the same universe as Marvel's Spider-Man series, Insomniac Games has maintained that continuity in Marvel's Wolverine. However, the storyline and gameplay revolve heavily around Logan's own arc rather than mixing it with other games' lore.
The X-Men ensemble is what Insomniac Games is aiming at, with the studio now introducing several X-Men heroes into its games.
The Storyline and Gameplay
The story is very Logan-centric and is grittier and darker compared to Marvel's Spider-Man series of games.
The gameplay is also heavily close-combat-based, making full use of Logan's weapons and giving the combat sequences a visceral combat experience.
Players will also see Logan being able to climb walls, do parkour, and use stealth mechanics with his tracking abilities.
Primary Characters and Characteristics
Logan (Wolverine)
Logan is the protagonist, and the gameplay sequence showed that he can use his claws for brutal combat, has healing options, and possesses tracking abilities along with a rage system that builds during combat.
The extent of the healing and tracking is yet unknown, but the mechanics mirror the character's aggressive comic book origins.
Mystique
Mystique has appeared in promotional material displayed by Insomniac Games thus far, and her presence means we could see a mutant-related arc included in the storyline.
Omega Red
Omega Red continues to be one of Logan's most dangerous enemies, and fans will likely be treated to the adversarial exchanges between the two characters in this game.
Sabretooth
Sabretooth is confirmed to be in the game according to State of Play reveal. Both characters share a long and violent history in the comics, and fans can see that continued in the game.
Jean Grey
The gameplay video shown during State of Play displayed Jean Grey coming to Logan's rescue during an ambush, and it looks like she will continue to support our protagonist in times of need.
A New Route in Tone for Marvel
Marvel games often don't choose to go the dark route. But Insomniac has ensured Wolverine's gameplay goes that way. The combat sequences are thrilling, graphic, and thrilling.
The storytelling in the gameplay video showed Wolverine rescuing possible mutant children from a Trask Industries container and being ambushed. With Insomniac keeping it very Logan-centric, we could see them take us on a journey through Logan's violent history, adding to the game's lore.
