All realms in God of War games ranked on design and content [Opinion]

Few franchises have created worlds as distinct as God of War. From the frozen peaks of Midgard to the lush wilderness of Vanaheim, each realm offers its own blend of exploration, storytelling, and challenges.

These realms are packed with carefully crafted design, content, main storyline, and gameplay that help build the overall God of War experience.

We've ranked all nine realms based on their design, content, story significance, and overall quality across the series.

9. Helheim - The Realm of the Dead

Helheim is a cold, haunting realm where souls who received unglorious deaths are sent. The designers got the eerie, cold, and dark atmosphere in the realm spot on.

However, the entire realm has little replay value, despite its uniquely haunting music accompanying you on the journey through the realm.

8. Niflheim - The Realm of Mist

One of the former primordial realms, Niflheim is now frozen and shrouded in mist. The 2018 title perceived it as something dark, with Ragnarok adding lore and more peace around the realm.

The lore expansion in Ragnarok is what adds value to Niflheim, especially with the late-game rewards the realm contains.

However, not much replay value combined with a lack of memorable events discounts it.

7. Muspelheim - The Realm of Fire

Muspelheim is a volcanic realm full of everything fire, from lava and eternal flames to literal ash.

The combat is what carries Muspelheim's value, with the realm offering great combat, good rewards, and valuable late-game content.

Somehow the realm feels incomplete, despite Sutr's rule, and there is little optional content around the realm that adds value to the landscape.

6. Asgard - The Realm of the Aesir

God of War gives life to Asgard, Odin's kingdom, and portrays it as a fortress with an army. The narration, world-building, and the portrayal of Asgard through Atreus is endearing.

However, its main downfall lies in the fact that Asgard is a locked realm in the 2018 title, and Ragnarok rarely takes you through the realm during main quests, with not a lot of sidequests to offer either.

Honestly, Asgard could have been ranked way higher if Ragnarok developed the Asgard narrative more and leaned into the more practical portrayal of the home of Odin and the Aesir gods.

5. Jotunheim - The Realm of the Giants

Jotunheim preserves legacy, a legacy of the Giants that also contains knowledge, wisdom, and prophecy. It genuinely feels like a magical experience, with the realm full of lore.

Again, Jotunheim doesn't have a lot of optional content around it, and while the emotional storytelling is class, there is little to explore beyond the main storyline for the users.

4. Midgard - The Realm of Humans

Pretty insulting to use 'Mid' to refer to the Human Realm (joking), but Midgard is the central realm in the storyline and connects the Nine Realms through Tyr's Temple and the Lake of the Nine.

The Lake of Nine is beautifully designed and one of the finest world hubs, concept-wise. The realm is loaded with optional content, and the locations are iconic across the God of War franchise.

3. Svartalfheim - The Realm of the Dwarves

Svartalfheim is home to Brok, Sindri, and the greatest blacksmiths in the Nine Realms, making it the breeding ground for engineering and mining.

The gameplay is filled with unique ideas, and the entire main storyline and optional content activity entail a well-rounded combination of puzzles, exploration, and storytelling.

2. Alfheim - The Realm of the Elves

The Light of Alfheim powers the Nine Realms, and Alfheim is a radiant desert located around it. The 2018 title portrayed Alfheim differently. But Ragnarok infused life into the realm.

The optional content surrounding the story of the Elves, the conflict between the Light and Dark Elves, and the rewards make exploration worthwhile, losing out to Vanaheim only in terms of scale.

1. Vanaheim - The Realm of the Vanir

Vanaheim is the home of the Vanir gods and is a lush region that inhabits the scars from the war of the gods between the Vanir and the Aesir.

The gameplay feels complete; the realm is vast with a lot of optional content attached to add depth to its entire lore. Vanaheim contains the large optional region known as The Crater, which is unlocked through the favor "Scent of Survival."

Vanaheim's blend of story, exploration, puzzles, character development, and optional content makes it one of the most immersive realms in God of War.

The Nine Realms are more than just locations. Their unique mix of story, lore, and exploration is a major reason the God of War franchise feels so memorable, with the best realms excelling in both design and content.
