In a game like Minecraft, where crafting and survival are core gameplay elements, and as such, crafting the perfect weapon to best serve you is paramount. You really need to know exactly what to spend your hard-earned XP on.
Enchantments are one of the best ways to level up your armor and swords to tackle problems and enemies more efficiently.
However, it's important to note that while there are a total of 10 sword enchantments in the latest Java Edition of Minecraft, there are only 9 if you play Bedrock. This is because of the absence of the sweeping edge mechanic in that version of the game.
For this list, we're ranking these based on everyday utility and long-term survival value. Basically, we're looking at how useful these are for a general-purpose sword that you take everywhere. Super niche stuff sits at the bottom. Meanwhile, the must-haves that save time and boost raw damage take the top.
10. Curse of Vanishing
Honestly, more of a troll mechanic than a helpful enchantment. If you die holding it, your sword completely disappears instead of dropping. It has zero use in regular survival. The only time it's handy is on hardcore PvP servers, so that enemies and opponents can't steal your good gear if you end up dying in-game.
9. Bane of Arthropods
This one is just way too incredibly niche to be good. It massively boosts damage against spiders and silverfish while slowing them down. The issue? Those mobs aren't really a huge threat anyway. Plus, putting this on locks you out of using Sharpness. It’s totally useless outside of spider farms.
8. Knockback
Knockback is definitely a classic double-edged sword. It gives the opponents a knockback by pushing them away during a fight every time you land a blow. This achieves two things. When fighting against a Creeper, this is absolutely fantastic as it allows you to maintain your distance.
But when facing off against Zombies or other players in PvP, you cannot make use of the momentum and keep landing blows on your enemy. Instead, you have to keep chasing them down every time you hit the opps.
7. Smite
Smite is actually incredibly strong, but it only works against undead mobs like zombies, skeletons, and the Wither. If you're grinding at a Wither skeleton farm, a Smite V sword melts them. Since it blocks you from using Sharpness, it's usually much better to put this on a backup sword.
6. Fire Aspect
This sets whatever you hit on fire for a few seconds. It’s great for extra damage, and killing cows gives you pre-cooked meat, which is awesome. The downside? If the fire tick gets the kill, you might miss out on XP. Also, fighting Endermen with this is an absolute nightmare.
5. Sweeping Edge (Java Only)
If you play Java Edition, this is a massive quality-of-life upgrade. It boosts the damage of your sweep attacks, letting you hit multiple mobs heavily all at once. It's an absolute game-changer for crowd control or running mob farms. Sadly, Bedrock players miss out on this.
4. Unbreaking
Unbreaking gives your sword a massive durability boost by adding a chance to completely ignore durability damage. A Netherite sword with Unbreaking III will last you a ridiculously long time. You really never want to craft a top-tier weapon without adding this first.
3. Looting
This one is essential if you wanna get rich in Minecraft. It increases your common mob drops and gives you a higher chance to grab rare loot. If you want Ender Pearls or Wither Skeleton skulls to beat the game, Looting III makes the whole grind a million times easier.
2. Sharpness
If you are more of an aggressive player in a fight or in general in Minecraft, Sharpness will be broken for you. It gives you a flat damage boost against every single mob in the entire game. No need to sweat about what kind of enemy you face. A Sharpness V sword slices through anything, making it the king of damage. Extremely crucial in PvP and single-player.
1. Mending
Honestly, Mending is arguably one of the single best enchantments in all of Minecraft. It consumes the XP orbs you collect to automatically repair your weapon. As long as you're actively killing mobs, your sword literally heals itself. When you pair this with Unbreaking, it makes your god sword completely unbreakable forever.
Enchanting in Minecraft completely changes how you survive and explore. All you need is just once to lock in that overpowered combo of Mending, Unbreaking, and Sharpness. That's it.
